Blackberrysbrings world music to India

Upscale menswear and accessories brand, Blackberrys, brought music lovers in India an unprecedented opportunity under the aegis of its annual flagship event Sharp Nights.

 

Aptly titled ‘Blackberrys Sharp Nights – Masters Of World Music’ showcased a live performance by world's leading world music performer FatoumataDiawara at the Blue Frog, Mehrauli. 

 

The inaugural Delhi chapter, part of a five-city music tour, had guests immersed in the passion of Malian world music star FatoumataDiawara.The internationally acclaimed Fatoumatahad the audience in raptures. 

 

Accompanied by a smoking live band, Fatoumatamesmerised the audience with her high-energy jazz and funk flowing into joyous and sensual folk-rock, inflected with the rhythms and melodies of her native Wassoulou, the historic region in southwest Mali. Her radiant voice and infectious Afro-pop mixed the expansive and the understated. 


Commenting on this unique amalgamation of fashion and music and its efforts to accustom the Indian audiences with the genre of world music, Nikhil Mohan, Managing Director, Blackberrys said, “Sharp Nights has always been a much awaited event. Sharing her experience of performing in India,FatoumataDiawara said, “Music is the universal language of hope and harmony. Music is strong and spiritual. Tonight was magical; I could feel the love of the audience in my veins. I am overjoyed to be able to let my tunes float in this air and dissolve my rhythms with the culture of India. The musical landscape in India is rich, bountiful and inspirational.”

 

With this first-of-its-kind world music performance, the audience received a double delight with home grown talentBarmer Boys,performing on the very same stage. The iridescent combination of Rajasthani folk and sufi soul served as the perfect precursor.

 

The evening also featured a charity auction from Blackberrys spectacular AW '14 collection, the proceeds of which will be used to nurture Indian traditional music schools, by providing scholarships for deserving students and funds for material support 

 

FatoumataDiawara, born in Ivory Coast isa Malian musician currently living in France. She has spent the last year touring the world, culminating in a landmark performance at Glastonbury, 2013. Alongside many European gigs, her schedule has taken her to South America and Asia, as well as on multiple trips to the US, where in September this year she performed as part of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. With her combination of a smooth yet powerful voice, slick guitar chords, and dancing, she has had audiences worldwide swaying with her and rapt in delight.
